There are four basic ingredients
that make a pizza complete: The curst, the sauce, cheese
and toppings. There has been a recent trend in "crustless"
pizza. It is belived that a person who orders a "crustless"
pizza is probably not a true pizza fan and therefore should
leave this site immediately.
Crust
The crust should be wheat flour based but can be
either whole wheat or bleached flour. It should be baked in an oven either
before the toppings are placed on it or can be baked with the topping placed on
it. You can use either a pre-made crust found in the supermarket or bake your
own. If you want to make your own crust, we have some recipe ideas in our
archives. Any good pizza recipe book will also have good suggestions.
Sauce
The sauce should be tomato based and seasoned to
taste with spices and herbs. When making your own it is important that you do
not make the sauce too watered down or too thick. Find a consistency that will
spread evenly but will not make your dough or pre-made crust sopping wet. If you
like a lot of sauce on your pizza it is recommended that you make the sauce a
little thicker. Adding such things as meat to make it a meat sauce is okay but
can make it harder to spread evenly.
Cheese
Cheese is perhaps the best part of the pizza.
Traditionally the cheeses of choice is mozzarella. Other cheeses can be included.
It is not uncommon to use othere types such as Asiago, Provolone, Ricotta,
Romano, and/or Parmigiano. The cheese is suppose to go on top of the pizza
immediately after the sauce is layers. It should also be grated and not sliced
so that it will melt more evenly.
Toppings
Should always include cheese. You can use almost
any type of cheese but the most common is mozzarella. Additional toppings to
include might be a number of different vegetables, meats or a combination of
both.
